Perio® Protect: All You Need to Know About This Gum Disease Treatment
Several dental issues can negatively impact your smile and overall dental health. Apart from dental emergencies, most of these dental issues can be prevented from occurring in the first place.
Airing on the side of preventive dentistry can go a long way in ensuring that you and your loved ones do not get affected by some of these dental issues. One of the most prevalent and leading dental problems that affect millions of people globally is periodontitis.
Gum disease and periodontal issues can occur due to several reasons, such as:
- An accumulation of plaque – which can be attributed to poor dental hygiene
- Crowded teeth make it difficult to carry out adequate brushing and flossing
- A nutritional deficiency
- Taking certain prescription drugs, which impede the production of saliva and lead to a dry mouth that encourages periodontal disease
- Hormonal changes, for instance, during menopause, pregnancy, or even puberty
- Genetics or a history of periodontitis within the family
- Smoking, vaping, and the use of tobacco are habits that can lead to periodontitis
- Certain illnesses such as cancer or diabetes have also been linked to an increased prevalence of gum or periodontal disease
Gum and periodontal diseases may develop from gingivitis, which is the inflammation or irritation of gums. Whatever the cause may be, it is important to treat periodontitis because failing to do so may increase your chances of suffering from dental complications such as tooth loss.
Several treatment options can be used to treat gum or periodontal disease. One of the best treatments for gum diseases we currently offer our patients at our general dentistry is Perio® Protect.
This Perio protect treatment has improved the efficiency with which we deliver periodontal disease treatment to our patients who need it the most. Let’s find out more about this periodontal disease treatment.
Perio Protect, In a Nutshell
Perio Protect is a non-invasive, periodontal disease treatment designed to combine the process of rigorous dental cleanings and the use of a specially designed tray to deliver the medication needed to treat the gum disease.
Perio Protect uses a form of mouth guard known as a Perio® tray to effectively and comfortably deliver the prescribed medication to combat periodontal disease. Our patients utilize these trays once they get home, wearing them for a few minutes each day to treat and remedy the current infection.
How Does the Perio Protect Treatment Work?
The Perio Protect treatment is anchored on the use of the Perio trays to ensure that the medication prescribed to deal with the infection gets to the gum pockets. The gum pockets are usually tricky to reach, making them suitable for bacterial infections.
The Perio trays are a periodontal medicine distribution system, designed like most mouth guards but are sealed to contain and deliver medication adequately. The Perio tray can access the infected gum tissues within the gum pockets and effectively deliver the medicine needed to combat the infection.
The patient puts the prescribed amount of medication on the tray and wears this tray for a few minutes every day at home in between dental appointments to ensure the continuity of their treatment.
How Effective is the Perio Protect Periodontal Disease Treatment?
Perio Protect is considered an effective periodontal disease treatment because it utilizes trays to access the hard to reach infected areas within the gum pockets and deliver antimicrobial medication.
The gum pockets are often challenging to access using a toothbrush, dental floss, or mouth wash, and this makes treating periodontal disease a tricky affair once the patient gets home from a dental visit.
The Perio Protect treatment is comfortable, efficient, and takes a DIY approach, which enables our patients to get directly involved with their dental treatment program. A patient can administer this non-invasive periodontal treatment once they get home from their dental visit.
Apart from efficiently treating your periodontal disease, Perio Protect treatment also results in you having fresher breath and whiter teeth, both of which will go a long way in boosting your confidence and overall self-esteem.
