TMJ and TMD Treatment
When someone is experiencing chronic pain in their jaw, it is cause for concern. The jaw is an essential component of the body and helps an individual eat and speak properly. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort just underneath your ear, or are struggling to open and close your mouth, you might require TMJ/TMD treatment near you.
At daily DENTAl & bracesbar, we offer comprehensive TMJ/TMD treatment which focuses on finding the underlying cause of your discomfort and treating it to help alleviate pain and stiffness.
What Is TMJ/TMD?
The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint, or the two joints which connect the jaw to the skull. TMD is a temporomandibular disorder. This is any pain, discomfort, stiffness, or damage which has occurred in the joints. It often presents itself with the following symptoms:
- Pain moving the jaw
- The jaw locking in place
- Stiffness
- Difficulty opening and closing the mouth
- Pain when eating
- Chronic headaches
- Chronic earaches
How Can a Dentist Help?
Some of the most prominent causes of TMJ/TMD are related to the mouth and smile. For example, bruxism often causes long lasting issues in the TMJ because of the excessive pressure placed on the muscles and bones. Bruxism is a chronic condition wherein someone grinds their teeth and clenches their jaw unconsciously. It is often done at night, but can also occur during the day.
One of our treatments is the creation of a custom mouthguard to wear at night. The mouthguard is made of a firm yet pliable material. It sits between the teeth and stops you from clenching and grinding. This reduces the strain on your jaw muscles, and also protects your teeth from damage.
If you have a different issue, our dentist might be able to help through physical therapy, injections, and even surgery.
